We arrived in Conil in bad weather. It was cold and raining. We have been here three days and the weather is starting to improve. The first day of bright sunshine allowed us to walk the beach. The dunes which separate the beach from the paseo ar in the process of rehabilitation there are carpets of yellow flowers at this time of year; vinagretas ( wood sorrel) and margaritas africanas ( capeweed) . They are both invasive species from Africa and can be seen everywhere along the coast. There are also garcillas (cattle egrets) feeding in the pools.
The first temporary chiringuitos are being erected; “Feduchy”, “Oasis” and Fuguilla”. The permanent Chiringuitos have just opened; “El Curro”, “La Ola” and “El Huerto” We decided to have a beer and something to eat following our walk. Calamar de Potera in El Huerto was a good choice. A Potera is a hooked jig. The method used to catch fish is often used as a signifier of quality as the less industrial methods preserve the integrity of the fish and arguably less stress involved keeps the flesh from becoming rigid and tough.
