Waitrose have begun stocking the first batches of English asparagus; grown in polytunnels or glasshouses The traditional start of the eight-week season is St. George’s day – 23rd April and the mainstream crop – grown in the open in fields is likely to be delayed by two weeks as a result of adverse weather conditions which have sent temperatures plummeting? The perfect growing conditions are a cool, crisp spring which is not too wet and not too dry.

The British asparagus season ends on the summer solstice – 21st June – when the last spears are harvested by hand.

This the second year without our own homegrown spears. We are planning a new bed this year so we are still three years away from harvest.

These were grown in Shropshire. We often grill them and serve with aioli or hollandaise.
