At El Roqueo for Sunday lunch. What a view!
El Roqueo was founded in 1977 by Francisco Javier Pérez Reyes y Sebastiana Mendoza Alba. Today their four children with Javier as manager, look after a complex of hotel, apartments and the two restaurants El Roqueo and the nearby El Mirador de El Roqueo. In the summer they run the chiringuito de El Roqueo. Since 2008 the chef is José Sánchez Pérez who has written several books on “La cocina conileña” He learned about traditional cooking from Sebastiana Mendoza Alba. (Chani) who was the first cook at El Roqueo
We shared a soupy rice with small carabineros. Carabineros are bright red large prawns. The name means “riflemen” they have become very popular and command large prices. At one time these gambas chorizo were thrown back into the sea as unsellable. Really juicy strong flavour they keep the bright red colour when cooked.
